Mary Niemeyer Sykes

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Niemeyer Sykes on June 29, 2024. 

Mary was born on June 14, 1932 in Savannah, Georgia.  She was the beloved daughter of Herman and Margaret Niemeyer, originally from Germany.  After moving to Savannah, Mary’s parents opened Niemeyer’s Delicatessen on Waters Ave and 48th St.  That is where Mary learned her love for cooking that she passed onto her children.  She attended Savannah High School  and Armstrong College.  In 1958, she married her husband of 55 years, Meldrim Lester Sykes Sr DDS of Savannah and they raised their children on Isle of Hope.

Mary was an active member of the Savannah Dental Auxiliary Society, where she made significant contributions to Savannah Dental Society events including catering large low country boils and oyster roasts.  In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing bridge and bingo.  Through her numerous activities and hobbies, she made many lasting friendships.  Mary was also a long time member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Savannah.

Mary is predeceased by her husband, Meldrim Lester Sykes Sr DDS.  She is survived by her devoted children, Leslie Sykes Long (Chris) of Savannah  and Meldrim Lester Sykes Jr (Myra) of Savannah, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Andrew Christopher Long of Statesboro, Georgia and David Christopher Long of Columbia, South Carolina.Mary is remembered as a dedicated homemaker that fiercely loved her children and grandchildren with pride and joy.

Services will be held at  3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Home, Hodgson Chapel. A private burial will be held in Bonaventure Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Savannah, 10 W. 31st Street, Savannah, GA 31401 or The Humane Society of Greater Savannah, 7215 Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah, GA 31406 causes that held a special place in Mary’s heart.
